It's been remarked that the appreciation of humor (or perhaps more to the point here:
wit) mainly requires the mental juxtaposition of
how things are and
how things are supposed to be, plus the context of the situation at hand -- it's the preception of a particular kind of contrast that can trigger the guffaw.
