MysteryReligion

I know next to nothing about them, but I'm still fascinated by the "Mystery Religions" of ancient Rome and Greece ... by the so-called "Mysterian" approach to the riddle of consciousness ... and by poetry and music and philosophy that wrestle with deep enigmas. Recently a Sarah McLachlan song grabbed my ear; it's called "Building a Mystery" and begins:

You come out at night
That's when the energy comes
And the dark side's light
And the vampires roam
You strut your rasta wear
And your suicide poem
And a cross from a faith
That died before Jesus came
You're building a mystery
...

What does it mean? I have no idea!

(then there's the bizarre and funny Japanese movie The Mysterians, with its badly-translated-into-English sountrack that includes a reference to a "little star" when they meant to say "asteroid"; see also TheMysterians (2 Aug 1999), ColinMcGinn (30 Oct 2003), ManOfMystery (12 Aug 2004), ...)
