Sometimes I find it tough to write brief, punchy, focused ^zhurnal bits ... but when that happens, I try to take comfort in the aphorism by Blaise Pascal:

Je n'ai fait celle-ci plus longue que parce que je n'ai pas eu le loisir de la faire plus courte.

which is translated variously as something like:

I have made this letter so long only because I did not have the leisure to make it shorter.

(as countless writers have observed, versions of the above appear in countless other forms across space and time attributed to countless other sources; the quote is from Pascal's Lettres Provinciales, XVI, 14 Dec 1656; cf.
