"Comfort" is a fine word. It originally meant to strengthen (fort, fortitude, etc.) as in "aid and comfort to the enemy", but now has the much gentler sense of giving pleasure, support, consolation, and sympathy. One of the highest acts of humanity is to comfort other creatures, particularly when they are in sickness, pain, or grief. A friend (NPS) quotes Mother Theresa: "We cannot do great things; we can only do small things with great love." Like comforting one another.
