Consciousness takes on different aspects at different times. Some are obvious changes, caused by drugs, disease, brain injury ... some happen frequently, like the transition from wakefulness to sleep ... and some are subtle shifts of mood or propensity, almost unnoticeable. Some mental modes disrupt the capability for self-appraisal, so that the person involved is less able to detect the difference than are other people. Some changes are sought avidly, and others are conversely avoided. Quite probably some altered states of mind, unexpected and misunderstood, can explain many reported observations of psychic phenomena, UFOs, supernatural beings, and similar unconventional experiences.
