When we first moved to this part of the USA I fell victim to a parsing error. It was 1980, an election year, and Charles Mathias was running for the Senate. As I took the bus home one day I saw a sign stretched across a row of four windows on an upper storey of a small office building. It read:
MARY | LANDERS | FOR | MATHIAS |
with one word showing in each window.
"Who is Mary Landers?" I wondered, "and why should anybody care about her opinions?"
Of course, as a new resident of the state of Maryland I wasn't yet acclimated to the local vocabulary. Eventually I figured out who "Mary Landers" really was ....
