We arrive early at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC for daughter Gray's concert, and as the sun begins its descent I venture onto the terrace around the top of the building. Solo seagulls soar by, much too far away for my little camera with its wide-angle lens to get a decent picture. Then I see a flock of small black birds land in the bushes at the southwest corner of the deck. They take flight as I approach, so I position myself a few meters back from the edge, huddling near the top-story windows in a vain attempt to evade the chill breeze. Eventually the birds return to perch. I emerge, and they launch themselves. (Click on the thumbnail for a higher-resolution version.) Birdy Sunset, Kennedy Center, 2006 - click to enlarge
