Comrade correspondent Lila Das Gupta's blog Recycle of Life is a thoughtful diary of her family's no-shopping experiment, a counter-cultural adventure in healthy frugality that strongly appeals to me. The simple goal is simplification — which brings to mind some other simple suggestions seen recently:
- Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.
- ... from the beginning of Michael Pollan's "Unhappy Meals" in the Sunday New York Times magazine of 28 Jan 2007; "food" means generally fresh, whole foods — things that your great-great-grandmother would recognize as edible
- Run daily. Run slowly. Don't eat like a pig.
- ... by the late racing coach Ernst van Aaken, quoted at the end of Rich Engelhart's "Endruance Training's Grand Old Man" in the Mar/Apr 2007 Marathon & Beyond magazine; I would amend "daily" to something like "frequently", and would include walking or other gentle exercise
