Thoughts from a New York Times conversation "Why Does My Mind Keep Thinking That?" between columnist Ezra Klein and author psychotherapist Buddhist teacher Mark Epstein:
Holding the Other with an open hand allows space around both of you so that there’s room for the inevitable moving away.
which comes from the metaphor credited to Stephen Batchelor:
... [the] difference between holding a coin in a clenched fist and holding it with an open palm.
... or in Toki Pona, perhaps:
jo e jan ante kepeken luka suwi la, sina pana e weka tawa sina tu
toki pona | loose translation |
---|---|
jo e jan ante kepeken luka suwi la, sina pana e weka tawa sina tu | holding the other person with a soft hand, you give room to both of yourselves |
... and:
o jo ale insa luka suwi a
toki pona | loose translation |
---|---|
o jo ale insa luka suwi a | hold everything in a soft hand! |
